·         Teaching

The Division of Post Harvest Technology has been involved in imparting UG and PG (M.Sc. and Ph.D) courses to develop human resource in the field of Food Science and Technology. The various fields of study in Food Science and Technology discipline are processing and preservation of fruits and vegetables; cereal processing and milk & meat processing.


·         Research

The focus area of the division are:

a)      Post harvest technology for loss reduction

i)                    On-farm storage and minimal processing of fruits and vegetables

ii)                  Setting up of modern storage systems i.e. control atmosphere storage, cold storage, evaporative cool storage.

iii)                Standardization of postharvest treatments and packaging material by using biodegradable, edible, smart and active packaging materials for extension of shelf- life.

b)      Value Addition and nutrition improvement

i)                     Development of convenience, functional and fermented food products

ii)                   Standardization of technologies for extraction  of colour/antioxidants from fruits and vegetables

iii)                 Initiatives will be taken for adoption of new technologies like high pressure processing, membrane technology, ohmic processing subject to availability of resources.

c)      By product  and Waste utilization

i)                    Development of technology for converting by-products produced in food industries into value added products.

·         Extension

The Division of Post Harvest Technology has been actively involved in various Extension Education engagements for the benefit of personnels from line departments as well as the farmers of Jammu region. The involvements include regular interaction through print and electronic media where technologies are disseminated in the form of popular articles. The Division is regularly disseminating various technologies generated to the Departments of Agriculture, Horticulture and Command Area Development.
